On December 16, 2004, the Hollywood Heritage Museum (in Hollywood, off all places), sponsored an evening dedicated to the history of the classic serials of Republic Pictures. The guest of honor was none other than George Wallace, who portrayed the intrepid Commando Cody in Radar Men From The Moon. The evening featured a slide show and discussion of the evolution of Republic including some great old pictures of Los Angeles during the city's infancy. There were heirs of some of the people involved with the studio during the serial heyday including the daughter of the late Aline Towne, who portrayed Cody's secretary in Radar Men as well as the Sky Marshal television series. Also in attendance was noted collector Bob Burns, who brought the "Purple Monster" costume worn by Roy Barcroft as well as one of the original Commando Cody helmets. The standing room only audience was treated to a screening of vintage serial trailers as well as two chapters from Radar Men. The highlight of the event came after Mr. Wallace concluded a discussion of his career. On que, I banged on an outside door and burst into the room wearing my replica flying suit, taking the crowd entirely by surprise. It proved to be a very special evening which I'll never forget.
